After the traumatic experience of a car accident, many people are in a daze about what to do and what is most important to make everything is handled as it should be. Here are the top 3 steps to take immediately (within 1-2 days) after an auto accident.
Step 1
Contact your auto insurance agent
Give them the details of the accident, the condition of your vehicle and let them know that either
- you are injured and will be seeking medical care or
- you may be injured and will likely be seeking a medical evaluation.
Oftentimes, injuries do not show up until days or sometimes weeks later. Everyone involved in an auto accident should have at least a medical evaluation, regardless of whether they think they are injured.
Step 2
Find a reputable auto body shop (if needed) for your vehicle.
Usually, auto insurance companies will have a preferred shop which may or may not be your best option AND Find a reputable healthcare provider for a full evaluation. Do not just go to Urgent Care! They are not equipped to provide a comprehensive evaluation and treatment, including rehabilitation.
Step 3
Get the care that you need!
In Oregon, you have 2 years to seek treatment and $15,000 of medical benefits as part of your auto insurance coverage and you are able to receive Chiropractic, Physical Therapy, Acupuncture, Massage Therapy as well as other treatment modalities, depending on your injuries.
Once these 3 steps are handled, you’ll be well on your way to getting back to your pre-accident life!
